Leadership roles have evolved significantly over the past decade, and today’s leaders face a complex blend of technical and people-related challenges. By increasing self-awareness and bringing energy to your team, coaching can help a technical lead identify problem areas which can hold them back from delivering value at their maximum capability.
One of my primary skills is to uncover core strengths and the areas in which a leader needs help. The goal is to build up confidence within the role.
Through a series of discussions my aim is to help identify any areas where the development process is breaking down (including HR issues) and facilitate a process for the technical lead to find solutions.
A technical coach can help reduce process friction within your team, build a foundation for long-term growth and success as well as resolve short-term problems. It’s about harnessing experience and developing teams in ways that in-house perspectives might miss.
I have worked in telecoms, investment banking, fintech, proptech, travel, meditech and more. My role as a coach is to step in with a vast reservoir of knowledge, but without the long-term costs associated with a full-time hire.
Preventing fires
A technical coach offers an objective view. With years of mentoring, assessing and directing projects, I can spot potential issues before they escalate, helping your team focus on creating business value. It would bring focus on enhancing your team’s capabilities, driving leadership qualities and improving communication. My coaching experience has led to teams being able to tackle complex projects with a clear sense of direction, which translates into more predictable project timelines.
A data breach can significantly damage a company, thus a coach with a background in security is crucial. I’ve implemented security strategies (ISO27001) that safeguard company data without impeding innovation.
Speeding things up
Charting the course of your company’s technology journey can often lead to disagreement over priorities. A coach can throw light on a strategic roadmap that aligns with your business goals and introduce formalised methodologies for prioritisation. This ensures issues like technical debt are managed in a way that drives business values forward, and that the strategic trade-offs are properly understood. The complexities of technical projects can be clarified, making them manageable and clearly understood.
Depending on the needs of the technical lead I can take a more structured approach covering various important aspects of the role and accessing my coaching playbook, or I might follow a more flexible approach dealing with the current issues presented to me.
